Leo peas

"Leo" peas are sold in cardboard boxes in the supermarkets, complete with Steeping tablet and Pea net!
That is not a typo - the Steeping tablet contains Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate and Acid Sodium Pyrophosphate. That's a lot of Sodium in various guises. Maybe this is why I can't stand Mushy peas.
These cheap dried peas can be used to grow pea shoots and that's what I've been doing through the winter, just to have a taste of summer by nibbling the leaves.

Ignore them for a week or two and suddenly there's a tangled mass of tendrils and wiry stalks. I shove the pots outside as the shoots are inedible but, being a soft hearted soul, I can't bear to uproot them.  In gratitude, white flowers appeared, pretty and delicate like small sweet peas. Their next test is to provide pea pods and I can assure any pea that forms within, that they will not be steeped with all those chemicals but eaten fresh. Please, Peas, pretty peas.

  1. I want to try this. What size do you let the pea shoots grow before picking them?

  2. Hi Carol, Not very big! They become a bit stringy. Its very quick though and if you keep picking out the small shoots more keep coming. Have a sow and see.
